When a Substantial Decrease Is Good News

It's usually pretty depressing to browse the news, but today I learned a statistic that cheered my heart.

I was reading an article by Nicholas Kristof (not sure if the link will work for you if you don't subscribe to the New York Times), and he cited the following amazing set of numbers from the World Health Organization (click here for the report, which also includes other good news).

In the past 20 years, the estimated number of deaths of children under the age of five worldwide has decreased by 35%. Despite increased population, the annual number of deaths has dropped from 12.4 million in 1990 to 8.1 million in 2010.

Still much more work to do, but it appears we human beings are making some good progress!
